Disclaimer
What our NPI lookup can tell you, what it can't, and how we make this free.
Data Source & What We Provide
NPIPublicData.org is a free public resource for looking up National Provider Identifier (NPI) records. We query CMS NPPES in real time through the public NPI Registry API. We do not host or maintain a separate copy of the full NPPES database on our servers. NPI numbers were introduced under HIPAA to standardize provider identification across the healthcare system. The NPPES database, maintained by CMS, is the official source of NPI records. Here's what that means in practice.
What We Can Do
Search and display public NPI records including provider name, NPI number, taxonomy (specialty), practice address, and other information published by NPPES. Our lookup helps you see whether an NPI appears in NPPES and view its associated public data for general reference.
What We Can't Do
We can't replace official verification from CMS or NPPES. We aren't affiliated with the U.S. government. For official verification (e.g., for billing, credentialing, or compliance), use the official NPPES NPI Registry.
How It Works
Our site sends your search to the official CMS NPPES API and shows the JSON response as formatted results. NPI records are public information not restricted by the Privacy Act. Status fields (e.g., active or deactivated) come from NPPES as returned at query time. We do not maintain our own NPI database for these lookups. Your browser may temporarily store the latest result so you can open the results page. See our Privacy Policy.
How We Make It Free
The site is supported in part by third-party advertising. We don't sell your search data, charge subscriptions, or put lookups behind a paywall. NPI searches are free for everyone. See our Privacy Policy for how advertising works and how we handle data.
For complete information about our practices, see our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. NPIPublicData.org is an independent resource with no affiliation to CMS, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or any government agency.
Accuracy of NPI Data
We strive to display accurate NPI information based on NPPES records. However, the following limitations apply:
Data Is Public Record
NPI data comes from U.S. government records that are not restricted by the Privacy Act. The data is maintained by CMS NPPES. We do not create or modify provider records; we only display what is published. NPI records include provider name, taxonomy, addresses, and status. All of this is publicly available from NPPES.
Updates & Delays
Provider information may be updated in NPPES at any time. Providers can change their practice address, add or remove taxonomies, or request deactivation. Search results reflect NPPES at the moment of the request; any lag is primarily on the NPPES side or in how quickly updates are published there. For the most current information, always verify with the official NPPES Registry.
Intended Use
Our lookup is for general reference only. It can help you see whether an NPI appears in NPPES and view basic public details. It is not a substitute for official credentialing, billing verification, HIPAA transactions, payer enrollment, or compliance audits. For those purposes, use the official NPPES Registry or contact CMS directly.
No Endorsement
The U.S. government endorses neither this website nor our search results. We are not affiliated with any government agency. Use of our site does not imply any official relationship with CMS or HHS. We are an independent, third-party lookup tool.
| Topic | Key development |
|---|---|
| 1996 - HIPAA | The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act required the Department of Health and Human Services to adopt standard unique identifiers for healthcare providers. This led to the development of the NPI. |
| 2004 - NPI Final Rule | CMS published the Final Rule establishing the National Provider Identifier (NPI) as the standard identifier. NPIs are 10-digit numbers that replace legacy identifiers (UPIN, OSCAR, etc.) in HIPAA transactions. |
| 2007 - NPPES Launch | The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) became the official system for assigning and maintaining NPI records. All covered healthcare providers must obtain an NPI for use in HIPAA transactions. |
| Type 1 vs Type 2 | Type 1 NPIs are assigned to individuals (e.g., physicians, nurses). Type 2 NPIs are assigned to organizations (e.g., hospitals, group practices). Both are 10-digit numbers; the first digit indicates the type. |
| Public Data | NPI data is publicly available and not restricted by the Privacy Act. CMS publishes NPPES data for download and provides the NPI Registry for online lookups. Third-party sites like NPIPublicData.org may provide alternative ways to query or explain the same public data for convenience. |
Important: NPI data is subject to change. We do not guarantee that information displayed is complete, current, or accurate for every use case. For official verification of an NPI number (e.g., for HIPAA transactions, credentialing, or payer enrollment), use the official NPPES NPI Registry or contact CMS directly. Users should not rely solely on our results for professional, legal, or compliance decisions.
