Overview
Find current CMS NPPES ZIPs, learn what each release type is for, and plan ETL or compliance work. NPIPublicData.org is not affiliated with CMS or HHS; we surface the same public index in a stable layout.
Who we are: see About us. For accuracy, ads, and limits of our tools, read the Disclaimer. For FAQs and general NPI help, see the Knowledge Base and FAQs. For live record verification against CMS, use the NPPES NPI Registry (direct link under Lookup, API & bulk).
If you need interactive JSON instead of bulk files, read API documentation. For a quick browser search, start from the site home (NPI Lookup). This downloads area is for full-file and incremental extracts you load into your own systems.
How this list is built
We read CMS’s NPI Files listing on download.cms.gov, pull ZIP links, labels, size hints, and notice text, store JSON, and render the table below.
- Source of truth for filenames: the live CMS page above; we show the same HTTPS URLs CMS publishes.
- What we add: grouping by CMS section titles, stable layout, and the operational status block (last successful read time, parser or network errors).
- Keeping current: When someone opens this page and the cached index is older than our update interval, we fetch CMS again in the background. You don't need to do anything.
Index & notices
Status for our cached parse of the CMS index: last success time, empty or stale cache warnings, fetch or parse errors, and notices copied from CMS’s NPI Files page.
From the CMS NPI Files page
- Effective 03/03/2026 NPPES will no longer support Version 1 of the Monthly and Weekly Downloadable File. Version 2 includes all updated field lengths with extended character limits for First Name and Legal Business Name fields. We strongly recommend using Version (V.2) moving forward as this will have the most correct provider data available due to the expanded record lengths.
- If you have any questions, contact CMS at [email protected].

Current CMS ZIP downloads (Version 2)
Version 2 (V.2) is CMS’s current NPPES downloadable layout. Each row is a direct HTTPS link to a ZIP; labels and sizes match our last read of the official index.
Use Download ZIP to pull from CMS. New CMS drops appear here after our next successful index refresh (How this list is built).
Monthly NPPES Downloadable File Version 2 (V.2)
Monthly NPI Deactivation File Version 2 (V.2)
Weekly Incremental NPI Files Version 2 (V.2)
File types in detail
CMS groups ZIPs by product (monthly full, weekly incremental, deactivation, and similar) in the table above. For each drop, read the ZIP readme and CMS’s NPI Files index (URL in How this list is built) so you match CMS’s scope for that week or month.
Inside each ZIP
Expect multiple CSV segments (core provider, other identifiers, practice locations, etc.) plus a readme with column layout and code values. Prefer Version 2 for new pipelines. Policy and version announcements from CMS appear in Index & notices after we refresh the index.
Release cadence
CMS publishes a recurring monthly full replacement and weekly incrementals between monthlies; delays or notes show on the NPI Files index. Filenames and “last updated” there are authoritative. We mirror that listing’s structure, not the ZIP bytes. If we can’t reach CMS or their HTML changes, this table may lag. Check Index & notices, then retry or open the CMS index (link in How this list is built).
Working with the ZIPs
Use only the official HTTPS URLs (the table points to download.cms.gov). After download, compare size with our badge when shown; keep CMS checksums or metadata if compliance requires them. Unzip to a volume with ample space; use streaming CSV readers, UTF-8, and expect quoted fields, commas inside fields, and occasional multiline cells.
Treat NPI as the primary key across segments. Keep effective dates and deactivation flags. For incrementals, log batch ids and file versions so you can replay or diff if CMS republishes a build.
Bulk files are point-in-time exports. For “what does CMS show right now for this NPI?”, use the NPPES NPI Registry or our JSON API (both under Lookup, API & bulk).
Lookup, API, and bulk data
Choose the access pattern that matches your workload. NPIPublicData.org doesn’t run NPPES; we provide tools on top of public CMS data.
- NPI Lookup (browser): quick searches without code; best for humans checking a few records.
- JSON API: keyed programmatic access with rate limits; best for apps and server-side integrations that shouldn’t download the full directory. Open Overview for the API documentation link.
- CMS ZIPs (this page): full and incremental files for warehouses, analytics, offline retention, or joins with internal systems.
- NPPES registry (CMS): official interactive verification for current registry state.
We can’t change CMS file contents, signing keys, or release schedules. File layout, code sets, and registry policy questions belong with CMS documentation and support.
Source & hosting
NPIPublicData.org doesn’t host or mirror CMS ZIPs. Each Download ZIP goes to download.cms.gov (or another URL from their index). We only keep a parsed manifest (links, labels, sizes, notices, timestamps) to render the same listing.
Issuance of an NPI does not ensure licensure or credentials. For CMS educational material, see their Administrative Simplification educational resources. For integration or display questions about this site, contact us.
